A series of public walking tours through areas of the city frequented by the homeless will be co-led by a photographic artist and a photographer experiencing homelessness. See the city through the lens of a camera and through different eyes. Bring a camera and wear weather appropriate footwear for walking outdoors.
The photo walks aim to engage the public in a dialogue about photography and urban exploration as seen from the point of view of people who have the experience of homelessness. The resulting images will be shown on the website so the public can get a chance to see many different perspectives of the downtown core. Which comes from a ‘homeless’ person, which from a ‘housed’? This project uses photography as a means of connecting communities. It aims to facilitate interaction between the general public and the homeless, breaking down the ‘us/them’ barrier. The photographer-guides will also impart tips about technique and aesthetic and create an opportunity for dialogue about living in this city. The walks will create more interest in the medium itself and remove the intimidation of trying new things in a new location, and provide a new experience of the downtown district for both the homeless and general communities.
